Rome grew from a little farming town to a massive crowded city. The wealthy were a little part of Rome’s population. People and goods flowed into Rome from four corners of the empire. Rich Roman women shopped for goods, accompanied by their slaves. Senators strolled with their own bodyguards while the soldiers walked through the streets. Most of the city’s citizens lived in dirty neighborhoods with crime and disease. To keep the poor from becoming a furious mob, the Roman emperors would give away food and provide entertainment like gladiator games and chariot races. Rome had special temples for the gods and gardens that overflowed with flowers.
