In the year 1764 A.D, a while after the Roman Empire was gone, a young Englishman named Edward Gibbon had visited the city of Rome. Gibbon had seen the ruins of ancient towers and buildings. For example, he saw the Gibbons like the Roman Colosseum. He marveled at Roman statues and is left over of aqueducts and bridges. Gibbon had made his decision to write a book on the Roman Empire. More than 20 years later, Gibbon finally laid down his pen.
His work had filled six books, and he called it “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.” Rome had a huge influence on the western civilization. As one historian said ‘’Rome had perished, but yet it lived on. Roman art was rediscovered during the period which was called the Renaissance which was a thousand years after the fall of the Roman empire. Awesome artists like Michelangelo revived the Greco Roman style.
For example, this put the style of sculptures and paintings. The Romans would learn how to use the arch, the vault, and the dome to create giant structures. A vault is an arch that is used to hold up a ceiling or roof. A dome is a vault in the shape of a hemisphere that rests on a circular wall. They had created concrete by mixing together broken stone with sand, cement, and water and then allowed the mixture to harden.The Romans had also invented a new kind of building which is called a stadium. These were big open air structures. The Romans would use concrete to create tunnels into the popular Colosseum in Rome. The Romans were awesome believers when it comes to healthy living. They would make sure people of Rome were able to get medical help. Socks were worn by both men and women. Socks were called soccus by ancient Romans.
